This Year Vow To Make No Little Plans…

achieve.gif ”Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir man’s blood… Make big plans, aim high in hope and work.”

- Daniel Burnham

Screw New Year’s resolutions. This year PLAN instead of dreaming, DO instead of wishing. What if the only thing keeping you from obtaining what you want most in this world was the lack of will to work towards it? What if your only regret in life was not having tried? What if the difference between those that achieved great things and those that settled for mediocity was effort?

Why do we always wish for things that we can’t control? No matter how much I want to be a NY Times Bestselling author- I can’t wish that into happening. (although it might be possible if my parents cash in all their retirement savings and buy every copy they can) What I can plan to do is to try a bit harder, to write a bit more, to try and make each line just a bit better than it might have been.

What if you reached for what you wanted and got it? What then? What new plans would you make?

Happy 2007!  What are  you planning for this  year?

We plan to move to a brand new country (well, new to us…it’s been around for a while).

If your parents cash in their retirement to buy your books, then you’ll have to support them on the royalties…

Yes Joelle, and then she’ll make me wear that “Hillary For President” T-Shirt. No way, I’m keeping enugh back to be able to live on our own. (If the wife takes in washing and Eileen sends Care Packages to us like we did when she was in university and in Belgium)

Going back to the quote Eileen had at the beginning of this blog, I am reminded of a gift that I gave her when she graduated from MSU with her Masters. The day of the party we rented the movie “Man of La Mancha” and that night I gave her a Lladro figurine of Don Quiote, which she still has on her kitchen windowsill, to remind her of the song from that play/movie, To Dream The Impossible Dream.
I have always told her to set her ambitions high which she has. I am even prouder that she continues to achieve them.

Hmmm…no wonder Eileen’s so cool. She takes after her parents.

    I’m supposed to make plans?

    I’ll get back to you…

    Exactly, Eileen, brilliant post.

If your readers want to make their dreams come true, they should write their obituaries. Imagine reflecting on a life of missed opportunities?

You’re clever enough to get to the top of the NYT’s list next year. No doubt.

    I love this post, Eileen!

Today marks day one of my ‘creative employment’. I am out from under the thumb of ‘the man’. My New Year’s plan is to keep it that way.

Happy 2007! Let it be brilliant!

You may not need your parents to cash in if you just have all of your cousins (of which I am one) purchase your books. I am enjoying your site immensley. Our mutual Aunt Joanie put me on to it. I will tout it to my sister, also you cousin.
